The Wilderness Bomb Update

Many will be aware of a major incident at the Wilderness site yesterday, 31st August 2022.  During work on the lake bed a World War II anti-aircraft bomb was unearthed; this was successfully dealt with at 10.14pm and the area was deemed safe with no further devices found.

We thank Carl the Site Manager for immediately alerting the community and staying on-site until the matter was resolved and the Police who took control of the site before the Bomb Disposal Squad arrived.

We understand the incident was alarming for residents, particularly the timing of the bomb being made safe; the Bomb Disposal Squad had deactivated 20 bombs earlier that day in Hemel Hempstead and we were the last one of their working day.  The alternative to safely dealing with the situation on-site would have entailed all houses being evacuated by the transporting vehicle on the route out of the village.
