Recycling Batteries

A recent incident, whereby a fire was discovered inside a West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) bin lorry, has prompted a reminder about the need to recycle batteries. The fire, which was caused by a cordless vacuum cleaner dumped in amongst the household waste, was fortunately extinguished however it highlights the fact that Lithium batteries in particular can be very dangerous if not properly disposed of.

The Daventry District guidance on waste collection here states:

  • Batteries and small electrical items no larger than the volume of a plastic carrier bag can be placed on top of your black bin when you put it out for collection.
  • Household batteries and any small item with a plug or battery can be recycled, including hairdryers, kettles, toasters, hair straighteners, power tools, electrical toys, phones, remote controls, radios, clippers and shavers.
